Santiago Nasar

The protagonist who is seemingly the one who took Angela Vicario’s virginity, eventhough he is engaged with Flora Miguel. He is murdered by Pedro and Pablo Vicario out of honor. His death is the one that is constantly foretold throughout their town. Although he is described as someone who enjoys the company of women, the narrator, Santiago's friend, describes how he never saw Santiago and Angela together. The author also explains that Santiago, when being murdered, did not know what he was dying for.
Significance of name in work
The name Santiago came from the name Santo Jacobo (Saint James). One possibility is the allusion to Jesus’ apostle James, son of Zebedee. In 40 A.D., James saw the Virgin Mary on the bank of a river while he was preaching. In 44 A.D. when James returned to Judea, he was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa. The clear association between James’s beheading and Santiago’s murder can present some interesting ideas.
